DC Studios! James Gunn & Peter Safran

Welcome to the DCU!

Originally known as the DCEU or DC Extended Universe, DC’s movie franchise has now been renamed the DCU or DC Cinematic Universe. Recently announced after the release of Black Adam, Warner Bros. and DC have named James Gunn and Peter Safran as the co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios replacing DC Films. The two have embarked on an 8-10 year plan for the film studio’s productions moving forward.

James Gunn has worked with DC previously on both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker both being successful. Season 2 of the Peacemaker series has been confirmed. Recently Gunn has taken to a new social media account Mastodon and posted a picture of the DC character Lobo as his first post. While many fans look forward to Gunn’s work at DC Studios his contractual obligations have him finishing his work at Marvel Studios first.

Currently, on James Gunn’s schedule is the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special followed by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The third installment of Gunn’s Guardians franchise will mark the ending in many different ways for the characters and team as well as the tenure of Gunn’s productions at Marvel Studios. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President stated in an interview with Deadline, “he has got a lot of work to do for Marvel between now and May, which he’s well aware of, but after that, I’ll be first in line to see anything he does.” With the workload Gunn has for him until his work at Marvel Studios is done he’ll be relying on his partner Peter Safran.

Peter Safran has been a producer for WB and DC Films previously producing both Aquaman and Shazam! He will also be producing the sequels to both of those films along with James Wan for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. His production company The Safran Company has had a deal with WB since 2019. With the new position at DC Studios, it’s safe to assume Peter will be producing most DCU movies moving forward.

Much is still unclear about the state of the DCU. With the release of Black Adam, the next film scheduled is Shazam! Fury of the Gods followed by several more DC movies that are already in production and scheduled to release in theaters. On his new account Mastodon, James Gunn opened up further to the public asking, “Which DC character/s who hasn’t yet had their own film do you want to see most on the big screen?” While much is unclear as to the details at DC Studios, Peter Safran and James Gunn have changed the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe.
