D23 Expo Recap: Marvel Studios Edition

Marvel Studios makes its presence felt at the D23 Expo. Here are all the announcements from their panel.

First and foremost before anything happened during the presentation for D23, it is important to recognize Chadwick Boseman as he was officially honored as a Disney Legend. A truly special human being that gave us everything he had and left us with performances that will live on forever. It was great to see his legacy recognized before the presentations began.

Marvel kicked off their panel with a live performance of ‘Rogers: The Musical’ that appeared during the ‘Hawkeye’ show on Disney Plus. Kevin Feige got to the stage and started right away with the first topic being ‘Black Panther Wakanda Forever’ joined by director Ryan Coogler.

Ryan Coogler mentioned the film is still in the editing process, but new footage from the movie was shown exclusively at D23. Some descriptions of the shown footage did surface online from people that were there. Supposedly the new trailer showed off Riri Williams flying, the Dora Milage, Namor fight scenes, and more.

One scooper was present at D23 and this is how he described a certain scene.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ focuses on the rest of the world trying to capitalize on getting Wakanda’s resources when they’re at their weakest. We will see how all of that plays out on November 11th, 2022. Kevin Feige called ‘Wakanda Forever’ “the biggest thing they have ever done.”

Ryan Coogler stayed on stage to talk about ‘Ironheart’. It was revealed he is executive producing ‘Ironheart’ and showcased a teaser of the series exclusively for D23. Also revealed during the teaser that Anthony Ramos will be playing The Hood. ‘Ironheart’ will explore the battle between Magic and Tech. Magic vs. science has been a long-standing concept developing throughout the history of the MCU so it will be exciting to finally explore that idea head-on.

The ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ portion of the panel saw Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lily, and Jonathan Majors take the stage. Right off the bat, we are told the film will directly link with ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’.

An extended version of the footage shown at SDCC was played exclusively for those at D23. Randall Park will return as Jimmy woo in ‘Quantumania’ and Kang says something was taken from him, and only Ant-Man can help steal it back.

The final thing about ‘Ant-Man 3’ that people in attendance were saying was that Kang’s suit was a chef’s kiss perfect. This was great to hear and means we haven’t seen that version of Kang yet. Marvel lately has been killing it with the outfits and costumes so surely this will be no different.

Marvel finally announced ‘Werewolf by Night’ releasing on Disney Plus less than a month from now on October 7th. Michael Giacchino will direct Werewolf by Night and he mentioned how 30’s and 40’s horror movies inspired him to make Werewolf by Night. It is being described as a black-and-white retro horror mystery. The cast came up on stage featuring Gael Garcia Bernal as Jack Russell the Werewolf and Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone.

Marvel Studios released this trailer to the public.

Werewolf by Night is exciting because it also means there will be more supernatural activity in the MCU. We have Moonknight, Blade, and Black Knight, plus the additions of Werewolf, Man-Thing, and Elsa Bloodstone. Could a supernatural team be forming? Will the Midnight Sons be here sooner than we think?

Next Don Cheadle went on stage to talk about ‘Secret Invasion’. Marvel Studios gave the public another trailer!

From what we can see in this trailer, this show will have an entirely different tone than the most recent Disney Plus shows. This will be very serious and mysterious as no one knows just how deep the Skrull infiltration is. We also got confirmation that Secret Invasion will roll right into Armor Wars, which will be a 6 episode series that starts shooting next year.

‘Loki’ Season 2 is a highly anticipated show as well. The first season set so much in motion with the Multiversal Saga. The cast of Loki took a break to make it to D23. ‘Loki’ Season 2 will again connect to the whole Multiversal Saga and will pick up where season 1 left off. Loki will be at the TVA and Mobius won’t know who he is. We got a new casting in this show Ke Huy Quan from the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Fantastic 4 fans will have to wait a little longer for casting news on the film. Feige basically said he had nothing to say about the film, but he did announce Matt Shakman as its director. We expect to see this movie hit the theaters on November 8th, 2024. Marvel Studios may have decided not to share much about this project so that there’s more of a spotlight on projects that will release beforehand.

ECHO’ has finished filming and fans at D23 were shown some footage of the upcoming series. Erik Voss from New Rockstars was in attendance and shared some details on ‘ECHO’.

Vincent D’Onofrio was on stage to talk about ‘ECHO’ and stayed on stage as they transitioned to ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ joined by Charlie Cox. ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ will begin filming next year and will have 18 episodes.

‘Captain America New World Order’ took the stage along with a cool new flashy logo. Danny Ramirez as the new Falcon was present along with Carl Lumbly and Anthony Mackie. The big reveal was Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader will be the main villain of this movie.

Shira Haas was announced as a new cast member playing an Israeli Superhero named Sabra. Sabra, in the comics, is a Mutant so this could be the MCU continuing to sprinkle in Mutants. And perhaps the most interesting thing about the movie is that it’s being described as “a paranoid thriller.”

‘Captain America New World Order’ and ‘Thunderbolts’ will be the last two movies of phase 5. During D23 we got the team that will be the Thunderbolts in the MCU. The team includes Yelena, Red Guardian, Bucky Barnes, Ghost, Taskmaster, Val, and US Agent.

It was reported earlier during the weak leading up to D23 that Yelena will in fact be the leader of the Thunderbolts team. The ‘Thunderbolts’ will be a group of misfit characters that have troubled pasts but will work together to possibly do some good.

Goose will return in ‘The Marvels’! The creature responsible for Nick Fury losing his eye will be making an appearance in the upcoming film. A trailer for ‘The Marvels’ was shown exclusively for the audience at D23. Here are some of the things people saw from the trailer.

Kamala, Carol, and Monica using their powers working together in tandem sounds like a quality team-up. It will be interesting to see how the 3 of them handle switching places with each other and why that is happening. This movie is set to release next year on July 28th.

This concluded the announcements for Marvel’s panel at D23. What projects are you most excited about?
