The Next Big Free-to-Play Open World Game?
Finally revealed at Gamescon 23, Project Mugen is the next ambitious open-world anime-inspired video game that will be completely free to play. Developed by Naked Rain and published by NetEase Games, Project Mugen will be released on Playstation 4/5, PC, and mobile. Of course, expect there to be microtransactions as Project Mugen inspires to be the next Genshin Impact.
Players will be introduced to a brand new urban world & cities full of skyscrapers that are reminiscent of earth. Its vibrant open world environment and landscapes seem to be its greatest feature. A supernatural world where urban legends and myths become reality. You will have to investigate anomalies that are troubling the city.
Espers
You will play as a group of characters called Espers. Espers are tasked with investigating such anomalies. You will forge new friendships, some being playable characters in which you will get to explore their individual storylines. Popular with many open-world games, the espers will have to take a trip down memory lane and unlock “lost memories.” That will play a large role in uncovering the mysteries that await you in the big city.

As an open-world anime RPG, Project Mugen is drawing some interesting comparisons. People have been labeling it “anime GTA” but also Insomniac Spider-man games as well because of the way traversing through the city looks. There will be tons to explore in the city. Whether it’s climbing tall buildings, going into subways, visiting parks, or turning up during the nightlife, there is no shortage of things to do. You will even be able to drive cars around the city much like GTA.
Each character has the standard movements, but certain characters have special traversal sets as well. Flashy attacks & skills, parkour & moving from building to building via grappling hook, the city will be your playground.
Project Mugen Key Features
COMBAT
You can engage in battle with up to 4 characters. Every character has their own set of skills in which some complement others very well, performing synergy attacks. Combat will include melee, gunfights, and supernatural abilities or powers. The use of your surroundings and the environment around you as your weapon is encouraged.
Urban Open-World
A large city map filled with neon nightlife & serene parks. Every corner of the map is interactive with a story to be told. A dynamic environment that reacts to your every move.
Vibrant Art Style
The developers are calling Project Mugen “a visual journey.” The art style is captivating with a super modern and vibrant city. Not only the city, but the characters themselves have flashy movements & attacks.

Project Mugen will certainly show off the talent of the developers as they aim to push the boundaries in interactive storytelling. Project Mugen is the working title of the game for now, but that could change in the future. All things considered, the game is gaining a lot of buzz as gaming and also anime fans are excited to dive into this new world.
