From TV Series To Movie: Armor Wars

Why is Armor Wars being turned from a TV series into a movie? What could this mean?

This week has been full of so much news surrounding the MCU and its future. Some good and some bad, but this piece of news could lie anywhere in between. It’s been reported that ‘Armor Wars’ which features Don Cheadle is being changed from a Disney+ series into a movie. This project was first announced as a Disney+ show back in 2020 during Disney’s Investor Day.

No one knows the reason why just yet, and soon Marvel can certainly say that a movie better “suits” this project. As for now, we can only speculate. This will be the first project we know of to go through this type of change from a TV series to a movie.

The hope is that ‘Armor Wars’ better fits the movie structure and format as opposed to a TV series. It’s quite possible that those involved feel that creatively it would serve best as a movie.

What you don’t hope for is that this change is because of perhaps a scheduling conflict or that the creators simply didn’t want to have a dragged-out episodic project. Hopefully, it’s more to it than just that.

One could come up with a few guesses as to why this change is happening by taking what we know about the project and the multiversal saga. We know that phases 4 and 5 are building to the end of phase 6 which will conclude with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. We also know that ‘Sercret Invasion’ will link directly into ‘Armor Wars’ and have significant tie-ins.

With those things in mind, it’s possible that some things that need to be tied together end up happening in the ‘Armor Wars’ project. There are governments and groups in the MCU acting on their own self-interests which could include vibranium, Stark Industries, super soldiers, Hulk shenanigans, and plus the Skrulls who have infiltrated earth. ‘Armor Wars’ could be the project that wraps up some or even all of this before the big Avengers movies in phase 6.

Since ‘Secret Invasion’ and ‘Armor Wars’ will link together, Skrulls could also be players after Tony Stark’s technology. Other projects that could have tie-ins with ‘Armor Wars’ are ‘Captain America 4’, ‘Thunderbolts’, ‘Ironheart’, and even the upcoming ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ movie. For this reason, it could make sense for this project to be a movie and give audiences a sense of how big the situation is.

Of course with ‘Armor Wars’ becoming a movie and it dealing with Tony Stark’s legacy in some ways, many fans believe this opens the door to having Robert Downey Jr. play a role as a possible A.I. cameo.

Last but not least, it would just be awesome for Don Cheadle to get his own MCU movie as James “Rhodey” Rhodes aka War Machine. From the Secret Invasion trailer, it looks like he’s been climbing the ranks within the military/government so it will be interesting to get a movie with a character of his position at the forefront. It could provide an intriguing and never-seen-before perspective on the MCU.

Many wonder how government organizations are handling things, especially after the events of ‘Avengers: End Game’ and into the future. ‘Armor Wars’ gives us the opportunity to explore that and then some.

We’ll certainly be on the lookout for more information on this project in the near future.

Why do you think the MCU is changing this project from a TV series into a movie?
