D23 Expo Recap: Star Wars Lucasfilm Edition

Disney and Lucasfilm drop announcements and trailers during Disney + Day.

On Saturday at the D23 Expo, Lucasfilm kicked off the teasers and announcements. Kathy Kennedy came out on stage and promised a ton of content, and Star Wars did not disappoint.

The first topic of discussion was ‘ANDOR’ which will be a 3-episode premiere on September 21st on Disney +. The show is being described as a “ 24-episode spy thriller.” Season 2 of the show is already close to beginning production. Seasons 1 and 2 will be a total of 24 episodes with the last 12 starting production soon. Star of the show Diego Luna says “ANDOR is like a giant 12-episode film.” Here is the trailer for the show coming this month.

This November, magic will return with a new original series coming to Disney + called Willow. You can see the upcoming trailer for this show here.

We got a date on the animated Star Wars show ‘THE BAD BATCH’ season 2. The hit show will be making its return in January, premiering on the 4th.

Star Wars fans got more information on the short series ‘TALES OF THE JEDI’. We now know this show will premiere on October 26th on Disney Plus. This announcement came with a bit of information about the show as well. “Tales of the Jedi is part of giving Ahsoka more backstory. 3 of the 6 follow Ahsoka, the other 3 on Dooku.” This announcement was also followed by an action-packed trailer.

In the trailer, we get to see Ahsoka Tano’s upbringing with her people. We also see a young Anakin pushing Ahsoka with rigorous training. A young Dooku is shown along with the return of Mace Windu. We perhaps get to see how Dooku turns to the dark side. This show could possibly give us the parallels between Dooku and early Anakin showing similar signs of falling to the dark side. It will be a great chance to also show off how and why Ahsoka’s Jedi and post-Jedi paths are so different than others.

Speaking of Ahsoka Tano, they transitioned right into talking about her live-action show with Rosario Dawson playing the role of Ahsoka. Everyone in Star Wars seems to be pretty high on this show. According to @DiscussingFilm on Twitter, “Jon Favreau said that Dave Filoni wanted to bring Ahsoka into live action ever since ‘The Clone Wars’ so they used ‘The Mandalorian’ to test if audiences would want that.”

Jon Favreau teased some great lightsaber battles and that Filoni is at the top of his game with ‘Ahsoka’. It looks like Star Wars is putting a good deal of emphasis on this show as Filoni also stated that many of the crew working on ‘Ahsoka’ grew up watching ‘THE CLONE WARS’. So many people involved know and understand the character that is and will be Ahsoka Tano.

We also did get an official glimpse at Sabine Wren whose a popular character from ‘Star Wars Rebels’ for the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ show.

The Lucasfilm panel went on to talk about ‘Skeleton Crew’ as well. This show has a bit of mystery because there just isn’t much information on it yet. What we do know is that it follows a group of lost kids during the New Republic. We did get our first look at Jude Law in the show. It’s possible he’s a character that will help and look after these lost kids.

The cast of ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 made their way up on the stage as fans are highly anticipating the next season. Pedro Pascal, Giancarlo Esposito, Katee Sackhoff, Emily Swallow, and Amy Sedaris were present on stage which got fans fired up. The Mandalorian could be considered as sort of a “staple show” for Disney Plus as it was one of its first shows to really blow up.

Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon is a bit of a fan favorite character who will be returning in season 3. Esposito mentioned “you haven’t seen Moff be vulnerable before… Only you can supply yourself with the patience to find out what comes next.” People aren’t really sure what that even means, but it sounds great coming from that character. Then the panel released the first trailer for ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 online.

Last but not least during the Lucasfilm panel for D23, ‘INDIANA JONES 5’. Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge along with the director James Mangold made their way on stage. An exclusive trailer was shown during the panel, not released to the public. James Mangold said that both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have been involved with ‘INDIANA JONES 5’.

This concluded the panel for everything presented by Lucasfilm at D23. If you’re a Star Wars fan, there is a lot to look forward to coming very soon. Make sure you tune into ‘ANDOR’ premiering on September 21st.
