Black Adam Review 8/10

Tell them the man in black sent you

DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures have struggled with creating their live-action film franchise for the past decade. While films like The Batman written and directed by Matt Reeves and Joker written and directed by Todd Phillips have had success individually, the studios have had limited success in creating an extended universe of interconnected movies for various reasons. However, despite critic scores and reviews, DC Comics & WB delivers a campy, action-packed spectacle with Black Adam!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays Teth “Black” Adam and despite being known for playing himself in most of his roles, he embodies the character. His embodiment of the character isn’t limited to comicbook accuracy however his expressions and mannerisms bring this comicbook character to life. The Rock trained to be at his physical best so he wouldn’t require any muscle padding for his antihero suit, however, it is his acting performance that captivates the audience as his physique is rarely shown throughout the film. The Rock as Black Adam is the best acting performance yet from the WWE star-turned-actor!

Black Adam

Black Adam is different than most superhero films in that it’s not based on an actual superhero. Originally a supervillain in the comics, Black Adam has changed and evolved even taking on the antihero role. The film displays the personification of someone who wants to do the right thing but will take unjust methods to get the job done. Black Adam inspires his people and is willing to listen to what it takes to be a hero from Amon played by Bodhi Sabongui. However, throughout the film, the internal battle becomes external with the Justice Society of America more specifically Hawkman.

Black Adam vs Hawkman

The JSA

Carter Hall also known as Hawkman is played by Aldis Hodge who delivers a powerful performance. While little is given about the character’s origin or backstory, enough details are provided to create a foundation. Hawkman is the leader of the JSA and his many interactions with the rest of his team are the highlight of Aldis’ performance alongside his many battles with Black Adam. The film allows room for Hawkman’s character to be explored further throughout the franchise.

Hawkman

Kent Nelson also known as Doctor Fate is played by Mr. 007 himself, Pierce Brosnan. His performance is nothing short of remarkable and the highlight throughout the movie, only second to the lead title. The CGI and cinematography used for the effects on Doctor Fate were visually stunning, differentiating itself from Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange. While the future for Brosnan’s character is uncertain, the actor gave a performance that left its mark.

Doctor Fate

Albert Rothstein also known as Atom Smasher played by Noah Centineo and Maxine Hunkel also known as Cyclone played by Quintessa Swindell had minor supporting roles in the film. Both characters were given small background information through dialogue but were there more as comedic relief and romanticism. While Cyclone’s CGI & cinematography were captivating and different from most superpowers shown on screen, Atom Smasher’s seemed reminiscent of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man. The film leaves opportunities for both characters to expand their depth.

Atom Smasher & Cyclone

Black Adam redefines superhero movies for DC Comics’ & WB’s DC Cinematic Universe. While the plot wasn’t filled with enormous depth, the film balances lightheartedness and a serious tone with amazing special effects and a score that lives and breathes action movies. The actors and actresses give a fun, cheesy, but rewarding performance that leaves viewers looking forward to a return. Most importantly, the movie lays the foundation for the franchise to explore characters further but also connects the franchise with other movies uniquely. Black Adam could be the groundwork that the DCU can build open moving forward.

Superman Returns! (Spoiler alert)

Superman returns and it’s not Brandon Routh! The DCEU, now DCU has been in a long state of the unknown since the firing of Zack Snyder. One of the most puzzling questions fans had was if Henry Cavill was returning as Superman. The movie answers that question with a bold statement bringing in the Man of Steel himself in a mid-credits scene. Dawning a new look, Henry Cavill is officially back as Superman!

What this means for the future of the DCU is uncertain, but one thing that’s clear for sure is that Henry Cavill is dedicated to this role. He recently released a statement and a new image of him as the character officially announcing his comeback. Further reports have indicated that a sequel to Man of Steel is in the works. The actor also recently left the production of his lead role on the Netflix series The Witcher. Most speculate this is due to the demanding time on the actor to play Superman. Whatever the case, Henry Cavill is back to bring us the Man of Tomorrow!
