The Spider-Man Timeline

If you’re a Spider-Man fan, there’s a lot to be optimistic about. There’s been a steady diet of Spider-Man-related news over the past few months. From Sony to the MCU to Animation to even Amazon Prime being involved, could there possibly be a larger play here? Just how connected is this web of spider news?

Tom Holland

The first spark of Spidey news came back at the beginning of November with a rumored report of Tom Holland signing a new deal. It seems Tom Holland’s Spider-Man isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and can show up in numerous projects. Holland will be a part of Sony’s plans and surely the MCU as well, but is it possible we could see him crossover to the animated Spider-Verse story too? It’s unclear whether or not he will actually show up in ‘Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse’. The movie’s Producer Chris Miller was asked about this and did not shut down the possibility.

“Let’s say… Anything is possible in the multiverse.”

Silk

Around mid-November, Deadline reported officially a new Spider-Man spin-off series. ‘Silk: Spider Society,’ which apparently has been in the works for some time now. There are a couple of interesting notes about this spin-off series.

It will be the first Spider-related show that will come from MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video. Angela Kang will be the showrunner while Phil Lord and Chris Miller will executive produce the series. The final piece of the news that came out which perhaps is the most interesting is that they will produce this series as well as many more ‘Spider-Man’ TV spin-offs. “Part of the suite of Marvel series from Sony TV.”

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are also the producers for ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’. ‘Silk: Spider Society’ will serve as their first live-action Spider project. One might think there could be a possible connection between both projects & the other spin-offs they’re supposed to be producing. It really feels like Sony TV is trying to build its own Spider-connected web.

Silk, aka Cindy Moon, is a Korean-American girl bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker. Her experiences are very different from the Peter Parker story we all know and love. Cindy was locked away for years before escaping and searching for her missing family all while getting used to her powers. It’s possible she was locked away to hide her from something or someone else!

Created by Dan Slott in Marvel Comics, Silk is a Spider-hero with a bit of a darker more twisted story. Could be fascinating to see what they bring to live-action plus the connective possibilities.

The Way Home Is ‘Secret’

After ‘Spider-Man No Way Home’, all fans could talk about was how much they wanted to see Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, & Andrew Garfield share the same screen again. The love and success that those 3 saw for being together in ‘No Way Home’ will certainly force the MCU & Sony to figure out a way to get them in front of audiences again. Luckily for them, it’s fairly easy to do that with the Multiverse Saga’s final film ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

It’s no secret that this film will feature a large roster of Marvel characters.

it will be the most opportunistic time to bring back everyone’s favorite live-action Spider-Men. In fact, it’s been heavily rumored that the MCU wants all 3 Spider-Men to be more than just cameos in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Some insiders think that they’re wanted for a decent size part in the film. Specifically, Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield to have larger roles in this film than their roles in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

Some have taken it a step further and believe the door is open for all 3 in some way to appear even sooner. Via The Cosmic Circus, there have been discussions of the 3 Spider-Men showing up in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ or the 3rd film in the trilogy Beyond the Spider-Verse set to release in 2024.

The Animated Spider-Verse

‘Into The Spider-Verse’ was a hit for Sony, some fans will tell you it’s the best Spider-Man movie. Producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord have taken on the challenge of completing the trilogy with previously mentioned titles ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ and ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’. The second installment ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ will release in theaters on June 2nd, 2023.

Across the Spider-Verse’ will be taking it up a notch and is a very ambitious movie. The movie has set an animation record already with over a thousand different animators. If you look closely, you can see many different animation styles even within the trailer alone!

The sequel is way, way bigger than the last one. It’s the largest crew of an animated movie ever.”

Miles Morales finds himself amongst many variations of Spider-Man in a place where they seemingly can be all at once. The big question is why is he viewed as an outsider?

But for now, the fun question for Spidey fans is how many different Spider-Men can you spot?

With all of the recent Spider-News, this brings us back to the question of ‘is this all somehow someway connected’? Will the different studios and outlets work together to make this one massive connective story?

One Massive Web?

It could be a mere coincidence that rumors of Tobey, Andrew, & Tom may cross over into the animated Spider-verse. Could be a coincidence that both ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ and especially ‘Beyond the Spider-Verse’ release before ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. It could be coincidence that ‘Silk: Spider-Society’ could potentially release before ‘Secret Wars as well. Not to mention the producers of the animated Spider-Verse trilogy are also producing the Silk series.

We also know that Sony is trying to build out a universe as well. The keyword here is trying. With upcoming movies such as ‘Kraven The Hunter’ & ‘Madame Web’ along with their recent Venom movies, Sony is clearly focused on building out this universe full of Spider-Man characters. They also made a vampire movie which may or may not be a part of what they’re building.

So to play devil’s advocate, it’s also quite possible that these studios & outlets are simply just making Spider-Man-related projects because the character is popular. But a fan can be a fan and dream of the possibility of something bigger.

The Spider-Verse story may not be specifically a “thing” in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ but reading between the lines, one could say a larger connected Spider-Verse or Spider-World is being built.

What do you think? Is it possible we’re not thinking big enough when it comes to these recent Spider-Man news?
