Thor: Love And Thunder is a romantic comedy mixed with sci-fi elements that take viewers on an action-packed adventure with the Avengers’ favorite space Viking. The film stars Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the God of Thunder Thor, who is on a journey of self-discovery. Along the way, Thor finds out that someone claiming to be the god butcher is out doing what the name suggests. Throughout the movie, Thor rediscovers the true meaning of love.
Natalie Portman returns for her role as Jane Foster after her leave of absence from Thor: Ragnarok. As the second lead character of the movie and love interest to the main character her role doesn’t feel diminished as it has in the previous Thor movies she’s appeared in, being Thor and Thor: The Dark World. This film adapts Jason Aaron’s comic run on Thor in which Jane Foster becomes worthy of Mjlönir and becomes The Mighty Thor. While her story in the overall plot seems rushed, Natalie Portman’s talent is on full display for viewers with her performance.
Christian Bale plays the main antagonist of the film Gorr, the God Butcher. Another adaption from Jason Aaron’s comic run of Thor in 2012. Fans of the character’s comic counterpart may be upset as his design is a complete overhaul. Director Taika Waititi mentioned in an interview with IGN, “His face in the comics, unfortunately, does kind of resemble Voldemort, so I was like ‘people are just automatically going to make that connection.’ So we decided to depart from that design and sort of keep elements of the tone, and the fact that he had the sword. Really, it was his story that was the most important thing for us.” In the film, Gorr’s story was slightly different from the comics as well as it felt like it was rushed. While Christian Bale is a phenomenal actor, his performance in this movie wasn’t captivating enough leaving viewers wanting more out of the God Butcher.
The film’s lead cast blends well together and is pushed to the forefront while the supporting cast struggles and is overlooked. Viewers get to see what the Guardians of the Galaxy have been up to and although they’re only in the film for a short time, their roles make a great addition to the film. Korg voiced by director Taika Waititi is as funny as always, however, his humor seems forced and sometimes comes up short throughout the film. Valkyrie played by Tessa Thompson who is now the king of Asgard is sidelined by the main cast although she is a part of the majority of the film. Her performance is charismatic and charming however her role in the plot seems diminished compared to her first appearance in Thor: Ragnarok. Other characters like Zeus have a significant role in the plot but are only in the film for a short time.
While the overall film is a summer blockbuster full of action, romance, & comedy, it struggles with storytelling and pacing. According to The Ringer-Verse’s Joanna Robinson, Marvel Studios mandated director Taika Waititi to make the film in under 2 hours. This is important because the film struggles to tell multiple stories that are interconnected and could’ve used some more time in the film without feeling rushed. The score is a perfect fit for this movie with the same rock and roll theme from Thor: Ragnarok. The CGI and effects capture the essence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the film struggles in many areas, the main cast, the visuals, and the score carry this film as if they were worthy of Mjlönir!
